# AirPrint

> Install a network printer on managed Macs so employees can print without adding it themselves.

The AirPrint control installs a network printer on the targeted Macs. Employees find it in the print dialog, with no setup on their side.

<Info>
  The AirPrint control is in beta.

## Prerequisites

A Mac on the same network as the printer, to look up the printer's address and model.

## Set up the control

<Steps>
  <Step title="Go to MDM > Controls > Add new control">
    Select **AirPrint**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the control" />

  <Step title="Find the printer address">
    On a Mac on the same network as the printer, run:

    ```bash theme={null}
    ippfind
    ```

    Copy the IPP URL it returns for your printer, for example `ipp://BRW91325BA9BE81.local:631/ipp/print`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the printer model">
    Run the following command, replacing `{address}` with the address from the previous step:

    ```bash theme={null}
    ipptool -tv ipp://{address} get-printer-attributes.test | grep -i -E "printer-info"
    ```

    Copy the value returned for `printer-info`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Fill in the printer details">

    | **Printer location** | | Letters, numbers, spaces, and hyphens |
    | **Printer address** | ✅ | The IPP URL. Without a scheme, `ipp://` is assumed. Without a port, `631` is used |
    | **Printer model** | ✅ | The `printer-info` value |
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select targeting">
    Choose which devices to apply the control to: all macOS devices, specific device groups, or a custom target.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## How it works

Primo deploys a configuration profile with an AirPrint payload, then adds the printer to the Mac's print system with the name, location, and address you entered. The printer isn't shared from the Mac.

[MDM compliance](/mdm/compliance/overview) checks that the printer is installed on each targeted Mac and reports the **AirPrint** status.

## Modify or remove the control

Open the control from **MDM > Controls** to edit it, disable it, or download its profile. Deleting the control removes the printer from the targeted Macs.

## Troubleshooting

**`ippfind` returns nothing**

* Make sure the Mac is on the same network, and VLAN, as the printer.
* Check that IPP or AirPrint is enabled in the printer's settings.

**The printer doesn't appear on a Mac**

* Check that the Mac is in the control's targeting and online.
* Check the **AirPrint** status of the device in [MDM compliance](/mdm/compliance/overview).
