The AirPrint control installs a network printer on the targeted Macs. Employees find it in the print dialog, with no setup on their side.
The AirPrint control is in beta.

Platform compatibility

Prerequisites

A Mac on the same network as the printer, to look up the printer’s address and model.

Set up the control

1

Go to MDM > Controls > Add new control

Select AirPrint.
2

Name the control

3

Find the printer address

On a Mac on the same network as the printer, run:
Copy the IPP URL it returns for your printer, for example ipp://BRW91325BA9BE81.local:631/ipp/print.
4

Find the printer model

Run the following command, replacing {address} with the address from the previous step:
Copy the value returned for printer-info.
5

Fill in the printer details

6

Select targeting

Choose which devices to apply the control to: all macOS devices, specific device groups, or a custom target.

How it works

Primo deploys a configuration profile with an AirPrint payload, then adds the printer to the Mac’s print system with the name, location, and address you entered. The printer isn’t shared from the Mac. MDM compliance checks that the printer is installed on each targeted Mac and reports the AirPrint status.

Modify or remove the control

Open the control from MDM > Controls to edit it, disable it, or download its profile. Deleting the control removes the printer from the targeted Macs.

Troubleshooting

ippfind returns nothing
  • Make sure the Mac is on the same network, and VLAN, as the printer.
  • Check that IPP or AirPrint is enabled in the printer’s settings.
The printer doesn’t appear on a Mac
  • Check that the Mac is in the control’s targeting and online.
  • Check the AirPrint status of the device in MDM compliance.
